Jacobsen Arquitetura

“Working with natural materials starts with the search for a balance of soft and hard textures.”

Paulo Jacobsen

Jacobsen Arquitetura is a Brazilian architecture and design studio with offices in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Lisbon. Their distinct design, focuses on the interplay between architecture and nature. It centres on spatially interpreting the concepts of transparency, light and fluidity to create a contemporary aesthetic language. Paulo Jacobsen made Architectural Digest’s 100 most important architects in 2001, Wallpaper’s 100 Most Influential Designers in 2011 and was awarded “Carioca of the Year” by Brazil’s Veja Magazine in 2013. The 9 homes designed by Jacobsen Arquitetura, reveal a seamless integration of the exterior and interior to create a sense of expansiveness. The roof eaves use slim aesthetics to canopy over the structures creating openness while sheltering the interiors. To compliment the sun’s orientation, slatted wooden panels have been uniquely designed to maximise both light and privacy. The use of natural and raw materials in the detailing and finish of these homes reveals the distinct artistry of Jacobsen Arquitetura, paying homage to the indigenous tropical architecture of Brazil.

Studio MK27

“Architecture is not just about space.

Studio MK27

Sao Paulo-based Studio MK27 draws its inspiration the great Brazilian modernist generation, placing significant value on simple minimalism and attention to detail. Founded in the 70’s by Marcio Kogan, Studio MK27 has won over 250 national and international design awards. It represented Brazil at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale and became a Prix Versailles winner in 2019. Kogan has also been included in Epoca Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Brazil, Dezeen’s 2017 Hot List and Wallpaper’s 150 Famous for 15 Years. Sea Mirror marks Studio MK27’s first project in Dubai. Uniquely designing 9 Sea Mirror homes, the architects embrace the parallels between Brazilian and Arabic culture to reveal a contemporary aesthetic. Using sharp lines, rich textures and wide volumes the houses frame views of the ocean and the iconic Dubai skyline. The combination of bare concrete, slatted wood and glass windows creates a neat composition of geometry. Sculptured planes and perforated metallic panels serve to transform light into matter. Each house offers a palpable lens through which to view its context.
